An available COM port is a serial communications port that is not used by any other program, and is recognized by the Windows Operating System. This may include COM ports native to the motherboard, COM ports from an Add-On board (or multi-port serial board), or COM ports implemented via a USB Adapter cable.

A COM Port can be easily recognized by looking for a 9 Pin Male connector on the back of your PC as pictured below.
